Urinary Tract Infections

Burning, frequent urination can be a bladder infection—but similar symptoms have other causes. A GP assessment helps identify the problem and select the right treatment.

What does a UTI feel like?

A urinary tract infection often affects the bladder and can cause burning when passing urine, needing to go urgently or more frequently, and discomfort low in the abdomen. Cloudy urine or blood may occur. Smell or dark urine alone does not establish infection; hydration and other causes also matter.

Do you need a urine test?

The doctor considers your symptoms, previous infections, pregnancy possibility, medicines and recent antibiotics. Urine testing or culture may help confirm the cause or choose an antibiotic, particularly with recurrent symptoms, suspected kidney infection, pregnancy or a UTI in a man. A culture checks which bacteria grow and which antibiotics may work. Not every uncomplicated episode needs every test.

Could painful urination be an STI instead?

Yes. Urethritis from infections such as chlamydia or gonorrhoea can also cause burning, sometimes with discharge. Recent sexual exposure, genital symptoms and the location of discomfort help guide testing. A routine urine culture and an STI urine panel answer different questions; one does not automatically replace the other.

How are UTIs treated?

Bacterial UTIs may need an antibiotic selected for the likely infection, your health and any culture results. Kauri can provide medication after assessment, with advice on fluids, symptom relief and follow-up. Do not reuse leftover antibiotics: a previous prescription may not suit the current infection. Seek review if symptoms worsen or do not start improving within 48 hours of treatment.

What if UTIs keep returning?

Repeated symptoms deserve a review of previous cultures, treatments and possible contributing factors. Bring old results if available. The next step may include confirming infection, checking for another cause or arranging further assessment—not simply repeating the same prescription.

Common questions

Is a UTI the same as an STI?

No. They are different conditions, although symptoms can overlap. The history and examination guide which urine or STI tests are useful.

Can men have a UTI?

Yes. Urinary symptoms in men should be assessed because infection, prostate problems and urethritis can require different approaches.

Can I take my previous antibiotic?

Have the current symptoms assessed first. The cause, resistance pattern and suitable treatment may differ from the previous episode.
