Who needs this certificate—and what does it cover?

The medical certificate supports a first Thai driving licence or a renewal for private cars and motorcycles. It records a doctor’s opinion about health conditions relevant to safe driving. It does not replace DLT training, eyesight and reaction checks, theory tests or a practical driving test when those are required.

Thai and foreign applicants need the medical assessment. Your separate DLT application may also need a passport or Thai ID, an existing licence, and residence or immigration documents. The required set depends on your application; the medical certificate is only one part of it.

What does the doctor check for a driving-licence certificate?

The standard form has two parts: your health declaration and the doctor’s examination. Be ready to describe long-term conditions, accidents or operations, previous hospital care, fainting or seizures, and current medicines. The clinical assessment records relevant measurements and findings, including blood pressure, pulse and general physical health.

The driving form includes declarations about leprosy, tuberculosis at a concerning stage, elephantiasis, drug dependence and chronic alcoholism, together with other conditions affecting safe driving. Having a well-controlled chronic condition does not by itself answer the fitness-to-drive question: the doctor considers its effects, treatment and any relevant records.

What if I have epilepsy, fainting or a long-term condition?

Tell the physician before the examination and bring your treating doctor’s records. The Medical Council driving form specifically asks applicants with epilepsy to attach treatment history showing more than 1 year without seizures. This is part of the assessment, not a guarantee of licence approval. Do not stop prescribed medicine to prepare for the visit.

How long is a driving-licence medical certificate valid?

DLT guidance requires a certificate issued no more than 1 month before the licence application, counted from the examination date. Arrange your clinic visit after you know your DLT appointment date. A certificate obtained several months in advance will not meet this recency rule, even if your health has not changed.

What should I bring—and do I need to fast?

Bring your Thai ID or passport, your current licence if renewing, glasses or contact lenses you normally use, and a list of medicines. Bring relevant specialist reports if you have a condition affecting driving. You do not normally need to fast for the basic examination. Eat normally and take prescribed medicines as usual unless your own clinician has advised otherwise.

More questions before your certificate visit

Do I need a medical certificate for a Thai driving licence?

Yes. A medical certificate is required for standard Thai driving-licence applications and renewals. Use the Medical Council driving-licence form, issued no more than 1 month before you apply. Kauri provides the physician assessment at BTS Punnawithi; the visit usually takes about 30 minutes.

Can I use a clinic certificate rather than a hospital certificate?

For standard driving-licence applications, a certificate from a licensed physician in the required format is the relevant document. Kauri provides this assessment; DLT handles licence approval and any additional driving tests.

Can I get the certificate without being examined?

Attend the clinic for the medical assessment. The doctor needs your history and examination findings to complete and sign the certificate accurately.

Does a driving-licence certificate include blood tests?

A routine blood panel is not automatically part of the standard driving-licence examination. Further tests are selected if the clinical findings or your specific application require them.

Can one certificate cover both car and motorcycle applications?

Tell the team if you are applying for both. Ask your DLT office whether it needs separate originals or accepts a copy, so the correct number of documents can be prepared.

Is the medical visit the same as the DLT fitness test?

No. The clinic assesses your health and issues medical documentation. DLT may separately check colour vision, depth perception, peripheral vision and reaction time as part of its licensing process.

How long is a driving-licence medical certificate valid?

DLT guidance requires a certificate issued no more than 1 month before the licence application, counted from the examination date. Arrange your clinic visit after you know your DLT appointment date.
