When can an employer ask for a medical certificate?

For employees covered by Thailand’s Labour Protection Act, section 32 allows sick leave for the time they are actually ill. For absence of 3 working days or more, the employer may request a medical certificate from a licensed physician or government medical establishment. If you cannot provide one, the Act requires an explanation to the employer.

Section 57 provides normal wages for sick leave up to 30 working days per year under the Act. That is a pay limit, not a promise that illness must end after 30 days. Government employment, certain occupations and school attendance can follow different rules. Notify your workplace promptly and follow its reporting process.

What happens during a sick-leave consultation?

Describe when symptoms started, how they have changed and how they affect your usual duties. A fever, cough, vomiting, diarrhoea, pain or an injury may affect people differently depending on their work. Tell the doctor if your role involves driving, machinery, lifting, food handling or close contact with vulnerable people.

The physician reviews your history, medicines and allergies, checks relevant vital signs and examines the affected area. Testing is selected when it helps diagnosis or management; a routine blood panel is not necessary for every sick note. You leave with a care plan and advice about recovery, follow-up and any work restrictions.

What information should a sick note contain?

Useful documentation identifies the patient, the examination date, the issuing clinic and physician, and the medical opinion relevant to leave. Where appropriate, it states the recommended rest period or work limitations. Check that your name matches your ID and that the dates are clear before submitting it.

The number of rest days is a clinical decision based on your condition and duties, not a fixed package. A certificate describes the episode assessed; it is not a reusable permission slip for future absences. If you remain unwell beyond the recommended period, arrange reassessment.

Does a sick-leave certificate expire?

Unlike a licence application certificate, a sick note is tied to the consultation and leave dates recorded on it. There is no single 1-month or 1-year validity period for all sick notes. Submit it promptly under your employer’s or school’s procedure, and keep a copy for your own records.

How should I prepare for the appointment?

Bring your Thai ID or passport, medication and allergy details, relevant prior records, and the dates you have been unable to work. A short symptom timeline is helpful. If your employer has a particular template, bring it, but an employer-created form is not required to begin a medical consultation.

If you were ill before today, explain the history honestly and bring any contemporaneous evidence. The doctor can distinguish reported symptoms from findings at today’s visit. The examination date must remain accurate; a document cannot falsely state that you were examined on an earlier date.

How do I get a sick-leave certificate in Thailand?

Book a doctor consultation at Kauri Health Clinic in Bangkok for 500 baht. The physician assesses your symptoms and can provide a sick-leave certificate following the visit when appropriate for your condition. The certificate records the examination date and the doctor’s advice about rest or work limitations.

How much is a doctor consultation for a sick-leave certificate at Kauri?

The doctor consultation costs 500 baht. During the visit, the physician assesses your illness or injury and can provide a sick-leave certificate when appropriate. Any recommended rest period is based on your condition and work or study requirements.

Do I need a certificate for only 1 or 2 sick days?

The statutory threshold in section 32 is 3 working days or more for an employer to request a certificate. Report shorter absences under your workplace procedure. A medical visit can still be appropriate for your symptoms, regardless of how many days you miss.

Can a private-clinic doctor issue a sick note?

Yes. Section 32 includes certification by a licensed physician; it is not limited to government hospitals. Kauri’s physician documents the assessment and appropriate medical advice.

Can a sick note be backdated?

The actual examination date cannot be changed. Earlier symptoms may be documented as history if supported and clearly identified. Bring previous consultation records; the physician decides what can be accurately certified.

Can I ask for a specific number of days off?

Explain your symptoms and job demands. The doctor recommends the rest period clinically appropriate for you and may suggest reassessment if recovery is taking longer.

Can the same visit provide treatment and documentation?

Yes. The consultation addresses the illness as well as documentation. Medication, testing or follow-up is recommended when appropriate, and the certificate records the supported medical advice.
