Result times are estimates after sample collection and may vary with collection time or laboratory processing. They are not a guarantee of same-day results.

Which STI package should I choose?

STI screening checks for sexually transmitted infections, including infections that may cause no symptoms. It can be part of routine sexual-health care, a new relationship or follow-up after possible exposure. If symptoms are present, the visit also focuses on finding their cause—not just selecting a package.

I want to check HIV, syphilis or hepatitis

Start with the blood panel. It includes HIV, syphilis, hepatitis B and hepatitis C markers. Urine panels do not replace these blood tests.

I want urine testing for genital infections

Both urine packages include chlamydia and gonorrhoea targets. Compare the full target lists and result times, then discuss which panel fits your reason for testing.

I want a broader sexual-health check

Blood and urine testing may be combined because their coverage is different. The relevant combination depends on exposure sites, symptoms and previous results—not simply the largest number of targets.

Understand an infection before choosing a test

Explore symptoms, transmission, testing and treatment. Each guide connects the medical information to the relevant Kauri options, where available.

What do the blood STI markers mean?

The four-infection package uses six markers. Each has a distinct role, so the report is read as a whole rather than as six unrelated results.

HIV 4th-generation Ag/Ab

Looks for HIV antigen and antibodies in the same blood test. Timing matters: this is different from a urine infection panel or a general health blood test.

Syphilis: RPR + Treponema pallidum antibody

These tests provide complementary information. RPR helps assess disease activity and follow-up; treponemal antibodies can remain positive after past treatment, so previous results and treatment history help interpretation.

Hepatitis B: HBsAg + Anti-HBs

HBsAg screens for current hepatitis B infection; Anti-HBs helps assess immunity. This package contains these two markers, not the full hepatitis B triple panel, which also includes total anti-HBc.

Hepatitis C: Anti-HCV

Detects antibodies to hepatitis C. A reactive antibody result can reflect past or current infection; an HCV RNA test is used to establish whether infection is currently present.

What can a urine STI panel tell me?

A urine panel looks for the organisms on its target list in the submitted sample. Both Kauri urine panels include chlamydia, gonorrhoea, Mycoplasma genitalium and trichomonas. The 18-target option adds other organisms and separates two groups of chlamydia serovars. Some listed organisms can be present without causing disease, so a detected target is not automatically a reason for antibiotics.

Do blood and urine tests cover every exposure site?

Not always. A urine result does not rule out infection in the throat or rectum after oral or anal sex. Vaginal samples or swabs from a sore may also be more useful for particular symptoms. Tell the clinician where exposure occurred so they can discuss the right sample or referral. The urine panel's HSV and syphilis targets do not replace appropriate lesion testing or syphilis blood testing.

When should I test after a possible STI exposure?

You can contact the clinic now to plan testing. The window period is the time from exposure until a test can detect infection; turnaround is the time the laboratory needs after collection. A 24-hour result does not mean an infection can be detected 24 hours after sex. Timing differs by infection and test, and an early test may need repeating.

Symptoms or a partner's positive result

Arrange assessment promptly rather than waiting for a screening date. Discharge, burning urination, sores, rash or pelvic or testicular pain may need examination as well as testing. Severe pain or fever warrants urgent care.

HIV blood-test timing

A laboratory fourth-generation HIV antigen/antibody test using blood from a vein can usually detect infection 18–45 days after exposure. PrEP or PEP use can affect the testing plan; tell the clinician about either medicine.

How should I prepare for STI testing?

You do not need to know the name of every test before booking. Share your reason for testing and the team will explain the sample collection and next steps privately.

Before you arrive

Note the date of possible exposure, symptoms, recent antibiotics, PrEP or PEP use, hepatitis B vaccination and any previous positive results. This helps the team choose and interpret tests.

For your urine sample

Ask for the laboratory's collection instructions before your visit, including how long to avoid urinating and whether to collect the first part of the urine stream. Follow the supplied instructions rather than using a routine midstream sample by habit.

Plan your results

Confirm collection and result timing when booking, particularly if you are travelling. Agree on a private contact method and ask when the team will explain any result that needs follow-up.

What happens after I receive my STI results?

A result should lead to a clear next step. A negative result is considered alongside the testing window and exposure sites. A reactive or detected result may need confirmation, treatment or follow-up depending on the marker and symptoms. Kauri explains the findings, discusses partner testing when relevant and helps plan prevention or further care. An STI result alone cannot tell exactly when or from whom an infection was acquired.

Hepatitis B markers answer different questions

HBsAg is used to assess current infection, while Anti-HBs helps assess immunity. They are two markers related to hepatitis B, not two separate infections.

02

Syphilis tests work together

Treponemal tests such as syphilis antibody or TPPA and a nontreponemal test such as RPR provide different information. The appropriate test depends on whether you are screening, confirming or following a previous result.

Patient questions

STI screening: common questions

Can I have an STI without symptoms?

Yes. Many STIs can be present without noticeable symptoms. Testing can be useful after a new partner, a possible exposure or a partner's positive result, and as part of an individual screening plan.

What is the difference between STI and STD testing?

STI means sexually transmitted infection; STD means sexually transmitted disease. People often use both terms when looking for testing. STI includes infections that have not caused symptoms or disease.

Which packages have 24-hour results?

The ฿2,290 four-infection blood panel and ฿3,590 18-target urine panel return results in 24 hours. The ฿2,490 seven-target urine panel takes 3–5 days. These are laboratory turnaround estimates, not infection window periods; collection time and processing can affect delivery.

Does a urine STI test include HIV?

No. Neither Kauri urine package includes HIV. HIV screening is included in the four-infection blood panel or can be requested as an individual blood test.

Is the 18-target panel always the best choice?

It offers a broader urine target list and a shorter turnaround than the seven-target panel. The best fit still depends on your symptoms, exposure and the question you want answered. Some targets reflect organisms that can be carried without illness, and the panel does not replace blood or site-specific testing.

Does the panel include HPV?

HPV is not listed in these three packages. HPV testing and cervical screening answer different questions; discuss the appropriate screening approach with your clinician.

How often should I have STI screening?

Frequency is personalized to your partners, exposure, symptoms and prevention plan. Some people need annual screening; others benefit from more frequent testing. A new exposure or symptoms can change the schedule.

Can I request just one blood test?

Yes. Individual HIV, syphilis and hepatitis blood tests are listed on this page. They can be useful for a specific concern or follow-up when a whole package is not needed.

Is testing at Kauri confidential?

Kauri provides private consultations and handles results confidentially. The team confirms how to contact you about results. You can ask about the privacy process before booking.
