Which wounds can a GP assess?

Small cuts, scrapes and superficial abrasions are common reasons for a wound-care visit. Selected infected wounds can also be managed in the clinic after assessment. Depth, contamination, location, circulation and your health determine the right setting. Deep, gaping or complex injuries may need hospital treatment or wound closure; contact the team if you are unsure where to go.

What happens at a wound-care visit?

Explain how and when the injury happened, what contacted the wound and any treatment so far. The clinician assesses the wound and surrounding skin, then plans cleaning, a suitable dressing and medication when needed. Tell us about diabetes, poor circulation, blood-thinning medicines, allergies and previous tetanus vaccination. These details can change the care and follow-up plan.

How should you care for a small wound before your visit?

If nothing is embedded, apply firm pressure with a clean dressing to control bleeding. Rinse a small wound with clean running water, clean the surrounding skin and cover it with a sterile dressing. Do not dig out an embedded object. Uncontrolled bleeding, loss of sensation or impaired movement requires urgent hospital care.

How do you know if a wound is infected?

Increasing pain, heat, swelling, spreading redness, pus or fever should be assessed. A wound may look different on darker skin, so worsening tenderness and swelling also matter. Antibiotics may be used for a bacterial infection, but are not needed for every clean minor wound and do not replace cleaning or appropriate dressings.

How long does healing take—and when should you return?

Minor wounds often begin healing within a few days, but closure time varies with depth, location, infection and health. Keep the dressing clean and follow the advised change schedule. Return if pain or swelling increases, drainage develops or progress stalls. Your clinician can set a review interval for the particular wound rather than a fixed timetable for every injury.

What about tetanus and animal bites?

Tetanus prevention depends on the wound and your vaccination history; antibiotics do not prevent tetanus. Animal bites and scratches need prompt assessment for infection and rabies prevention. Wash a possible rabies exposure with soap and running water for at least 15 minutes and seek urgent medical care—do not wait for a routine booking. Kauri’s rabies guide explains post-exposure vaccination and when additional treatment may be needed.
