Hepatitis B Vaccination in Bangkok
Protect your liver before infection—with clear guidance on vaccination records, blood tests and completing your course.
What is hepatitis B, and why is vaccination important?
Hepatitis B is a viral infection of the liver. It can be short-term or persist for years without obvious symptoms; chronic infection can lead to cirrhosis and liver cancer. Vaccination provides strong preventive protection for people who are not already immune or infected. Kauri offers hepatitis B vaccination and can help interpret relevant infection and immunity results.

How do people catch hepatitis B?
The virus spreads through infected blood and certain body fluids, including through sex, shared needles, contaminated equipment and childbirth. Sharing razors or toothbrushes can create blood exposure. It is not spread through hugging, coughing, sharing food or ordinary social contact. Knowing the route helps focus prevention without avoiding everyday contact with someone living with hepatitis B.

Can hepatitis B be silent?
Yes. People may feel well despite infection. When symptoms occur, they can include tiredness, reduced appetite, nausea, upper abdominal discomfort, dark urine and yellowing of the eyes or skin. Blood tests, rather than symptoms alone, distinguish current infection from immunity. New jaundice or significant illness needs assessment, not simply a vaccination appointment.
How does the vaccine protect long-term liver health?
By preventing hepatitis B infection, vaccination reduces the pathway to chronic hepatitis, cirrhosis and hepatitis B-related liver cancer. It is particularly worth reviewing protection if a partner or household member has hepatitis B, your work involves blood exposure, you have new sexual partners or you have no clear vaccination record. Vaccination is prevention—not a treatment that clears an existing infection.
Do you need blood tests before hepatitis B vaccination?
Records and blood tests can clarify whether you need protection. HBsAg looks for evidence of current infection; anti-HBs assesses surface antibodies associated with immunity. Total anti-HBc helps identify previous or current natural infection. These results are interpreted together with vaccination history—not as isolated numbers. Testing can be useful, but is not a universal reason to postpone indicated vaccination.
Bring any previous hepatitis B results. If infection is found, the next step is assessment of liver health and appropriate follow-up. If you are already protected, an unnecessary repeat course may be avoided.
What is the hepatitis B vaccine schedule?
A common adult schedule uses 3 doses at months 0, 1 and 6. This is an educational example, not a claim that every hepatitis B vaccine follows the same schedule. Product, previous doses, dialysis or immune conditions can change the plan. Kauri records the first dose and helps arrange the remaining appointments.
If a dose was missed, bring the dates you have. Courses usually continue from the remaining dose rather than automatically restarting. A recent needlestick or sexual exposure requires prompt medical assessment because vaccine and sometimes hepatitis B immunoglobulin may be time-sensitive.
Do you need an antibody check or a booster afterwards?
Healthy people do not usually need routine antibody testing or boosters after an appropriate completed course. Selected groups, such as people on dialysis, some people with impaired immunity and healthcare workers with exposure risk, may need testing or a different follow-up plan. A low anti-HBs level years later does not automatically mean protection has disappeared.
A sore arm, mild fever, headache or fatigue can occur after vaccination. Tell the team about a serious allergy to a previous dose or component, including yeast. The vaccine does not contain infectious hepatitis B virus and cannot cause hepatitis B.
More vaccine questions, answered
Does hepatitis B vaccination protect against hepatitis A or C?
A single-antigen hepatitis B vaccine protects against hepatitis B, not hepatitis A or C. These are different viruses with different prevention and testing pathways.
Can I be vaccinated if I had childhood doses?
Bring your record. A documented complete childhood course may already provide lasting protection. The clinician checks whether any doses or specific follow-up are actually needed.
Can a hepatitis B carrier be cured by vaccination?
No. Vaccination is preventive. Someone with current hepatitis B needs assessment and follow-up for the infection; household and sexual contacts may benefit from checking their own protection.
