Influenza Vaccination in Bangkok

An annual step to reduce influenza illness, protect against serious complications and prepare for work, family life or travel.

What is influenza, and why get a flu vaccine?

Influenza is a contagious respiratory infection, usually caused by influenza A or B viruses. It can bring sudden fever, cough, body aches and marked tiredness—not just a runny nose. Annual vaccination helps reduce the chance of influenza and serious complications. Kauri offers influenza vaccination in Bangkok with a review of your age, health and previous vaccine history.

How does flu spread?

An infected person releases respiratory particles when talking, coughing or sneezing. Close contact, crowded indoor spaces and contaminated hands can help spread infection. Offices, public transport, schools and travel create frequent opportunities for contact; good ventilation, hand hygiene and staying home when ill remain useful alongside vaccination.

How is influenza different from a cold?

Flu often starts more suddenly, with fever, headache, muscle aches, cough and exhaustion. A cold more often centres on a blocked or runny nose and milder symptoms. Symptoms overlap with COVID-19 and other infections, so symptoms alone cannot reliably identify the virus. A clinician may recommend testing when it affects treatment or infection precautions.

Why does an annual flu vaccine matter?

Flu can cause pneumonia, worsen existing heart or lung disease and lead to hospital care. Older adults, pregnant people, young children and people with certain chronic or immune conditions have a higher risk of complications. Vaccination can reduce illness and make breakthrough illness less severe. Protecting yourself also helps reduce the chance of bringing influenza to vulnerable people around you.

The virus changes and vaccine protection decreases over time. The seasonal formulation is updated to match expected circulating strains, which is why last year’s dose does not replace this year’s vaccination.

When should you get vaccinated in Thailand?

Influenza can circulate throughout the year in tropical settings. Thailand’s campaigns commonly prepare for increased activity around the rainy season. Aim to vaccinate before a period of likely exposure or travel, allowing about 2 weeks for protection to develop. If you missed a campaign period, ask about the current vaccine rather than assuming you must wait another year.

Most adults receive one seasonal dose each year. Some children need two doses in their first or incompletely documented vaccination season. The exact product and schedule depend on age and vaccine history; the clinic confirms these at your visit.

Who should consider a flu vaccine?

Discuss vaccination if you want annual protection, have regular contact with the public, live with someone vulnerable or are planning travel. People at higher risk of severe influenza particularly benefit. Tell the team about previous serious vaccine reactions, current fever, pregnancy and immune conditions so the appropriate formulation can be selected.

Can the flu injection give you influenza?

An inactivated influenza injection cannot cause influenza infection. A sore arm, mild fever or aches can reflect a short immune response after vaccination. You can still catch another respiratory virus, or encounter influenza before protection develops. Seek prompt care for breathing difficulty, chest pain, confusion or severe deterioration rather than treating these as a routine vaccine effect.

More vaccine questions, answered

Do healthy adults benefit from flu vaccination?

Yes. Healthy adults can catch influenza and lose days to fever and fatigue. Annual vaccination reduces risk, while people with additional health risks have an especially strong reason to prioritise it.

Does the flu vaccine prevent all colds?

No. It targets influenza, not every virus that causes cough, sore throat or a runny nose. A respiratory illness after vaccination does not automatically mean the flu vaccine failed.

Do I need a blood test before a flu vaccine?

Routine antibody testing is not generally needed. A review of your health, age, allergies and previous vaccination is usually the relevant starting point.
